Child and Youth Domestic Violence Advocate

Summary:

The Child and Youth Domestic Violence Advocate provides direct and indirect services to child and adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Services include counseling, court advocacy, safety planning, hospital accompaniment, and crisis intervention. Travel to King William and King & Queen Counties is required. Serves in an on-call capacity as required. This is a full-time, benefit eligible, 40 hours per week, exempt position (FTE 1).


Essential Functions:

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:

  • Provides supportive counseling to child and youth survivors of domestic and sexual violence;
  • Provides advocacy on behalf of clients working within various systems such as court, DSS, and mental health agencies;
  • Provides court advocacy and case management such as assistance filing for protective orders, accompaniment to civil court hearings, and referrals to attorneys;
  • Prepares reports and other types of correspondence; prepares and maintains files and records; submits reports to appropriate agencies;
  • Provides training to professionals in education, law enforcement, court services, and other community-based organizations regarding domestic and sexual violence;
  • Participates in trainings related to domestic and sexual violence and stalking to stay current on best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in psychology, social work, human services, counseling, or related field and moderate experience in providing indirect services to at-risk families, working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.
  • Master's degree and license eligible (LCSW or LPC) preferred.
  • Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Physical Requirements:

This work is sedentary and requires little to no exertion of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing and walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to understand words spoken at a normal volume; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Health Navigator

Summary:

The Health Navigator will provide direct services to children and their families impacted by health-related social needs, primarily participants of the King and Queen County Family C.A.R.E. Center in Shacklefords, VA. It may also include families throughout the agency service area. The work of the Health Navigator includes addressing challenges associated with navigating health benefits and nutrition resources. It also includes developing programming to improve access to healthcare resources and facilitating health education activities and workshops. The Health Navigator will conduct family assessments, identify practical interventions, and develop long-term and short-term health-related goals using the coaching method and the Whole Family Approach. The Health Navigator must maintain files and records, prepare reports, and perform related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Economic Empowerment. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides one-to-one assessment, mentoring, coaching, and goal setting, specifically around objectives related to health-related social needs for families. Manages assigned caseload.
  • Facilitates/Coordinates family wellness one-on-one sessions and workshops to include topics related to benefit coordination (SNAP, WIC, Medicaid), healthy living, grocery budgeting, and nutrition.
  • Serves as a resource for coordinating health insurance and finding medical, dental and specialist providers for the whole family.
  • Oversees and maintains the K&Q Family C.A.R.E. Center resource pantry to serve as a resource regarding basic needs, including food, hygiene products, and household goods.
  • Links participants to medical transportation options.
  • Cultivates relationships with local health providers to advocate for participants, including primary care physicians, pediatricians, and other health care professionals. This includes identifying ways to minimize barriers to scheduling and keeping appointments.
  • Advocates for customers working within various organizations that address health, such as Healthy Families, Health Department, DSS, Mental Health agencies, Virginia Cooperative Extension, etc.
  • Collects data and creates reports that comply with the National Family Support Network’s Standards of Quality for Family Strengthening and Support and is proficient in the Five Protective Factors framework.
  • Prepares reports and other types of correspondence; prepares and maintains files and records with the ability to use Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Participates in Whole Family and additional training to stay current on best practices.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with community partners in the service area and serves on committees as required. Assists with community outreach events as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree with coursework in psychology, social work, human services, public health, or related field and moderate experience in providing direct services to at-risk families, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special consideration to persons who can speak Spanish.
